Legal reporting awards - categories

In 2012, legal reporting awards are being offered in the following 14 categories for work published or broadcast in 2011, which is about or related to Victoria. To enter, see: Legal reporting awards.

Reporter of the year on legal issues

This category is the most prestigious in the Awards and represents the highest achievement in legal reporting excellence for the year.  For a portfolio of work or a single report in any medium which best reflects the purposes of the Awards.

Columb Brennan Award for excellence in court reporting

In memory of Columb Brennan, a preeminent court reporter, employed for the old Melbourne Herald for more than 25 years. For a portfolio of work or a single report in any medium which accurately and fairly reports on a case in a Victorian court.

Tony Smith Award for reporting which promotes an understanding of the work of the courts

In memory of Tony Smith, County Court judge and one of Australia’s most distinguished media lawyers, who worked tirelessly to bridge the gap between the courts and the media. For a portfolio of work or a single report in any medium which helps the Victorian public to better understand the work of the courts.

Best report in print

For a single news or feature report in a printed publication – includes newspapers, magazines and industry publications. 

Best feature (new in 2012)

For a single in-depth report in any medium.

Best report on television – short form

For a single report on television – includes news and current affairs programs.

Best report on television – long form

For a single in-depth report on television – includes news and current affairs programs.

Best report on radio

For a single report on radio – includes news and current affairs programs.  

Best online report

For a single news or feature report published online – includes blog or multi-media presentation.

Best news breaking report – all media

For a single report in print, television, radio or online media which led media coverage of an issue or matter relating to the law and legal system.

Best report in community media

For a single report or portfolio of work in any medium from a community media organisation. 

Best report in multicultural media

For a single report or portfolio of work in any medium from a multicultural media organisation.

Best photograph

For a single photograph which appears in print or online media and best captures a legal issue or event relating to the law.

Best illustration

For a single illustration which appears in print or online media and best articulates a legal issue or event.
