Our final Law Talks event for 2016 took place in Wangaratta in August. The program was attended by 150 students from 8 schools across the region over two days. Many students had travelled from Shepparton and Echuca and we appreciate the effort made by their teachers to organise and travel to the event. We were delighted to have two exchange students from Italy attending – it really is a small world. While it was a very pleasing turn out, this was still a boutique Law Talks when compared to the 300 students who attended in the more densely populated Warrnambool region. Wangaratta was therefore a more intimate experience for both speakers and students, and everyone involved commented on how enjoyable that was.
Teachers resources continues to grow in reputation and content and to consolidate its standing as an exceptional resource for legal studies and civics and citizenships teachers. Some new resources which have been added recently and are of particular interest are Secondary school road safety education resources by VicRoads and the Street law (education kit) by Victoria Legal Aid and Youthlaw.
New Legal Studies Curriculum
The new VCAA study design for Legal Studies is currently being reviewed and will be introduced next year, and replace the existing curriculum in 2018. Once it has been finalised Teachers Resources will have to be reviewed to ensure resources are still relevant to the curriculum and are appropriately described. Watch this space for more information about the new Legal Studies Curriculum in the near future.
