About the project

Over twelve months, Inner Melbourne Community Legal lawyers provided advice, education and information to patients of the Royal Children’s Hospital in a range of areas of law. Community legal education was also provided to hospital staff to improve legal referrals and assistance.
This partnership between Royal Children’s Hospital and community lawyers aimed to improve the health and wellbeing of patients and their families by including legal assistance as one of the components of care that is provided on site to patients and their families.

Outcome of the project

Overall there was positive feedback from clients and health professionals about the on-site legal clinic and the legal advice that could be provided through secondary consultations.

The main challenge for the project was a low rate of referrals (26). This has been attributed to a number of factors, including lack of awareness and knowledge about the on-site legal clinic by patients and hospital staff and a lack of understanding by hospital staff of what constitutes a legal problem. To address this, the service has identified the need to broaden the promotion and marketing strategies undertaken.

Inner Melbourne Community Legal are now seeking ongoing fund to continue this service.
