Regional Law Talks – Improving students’ understanding of the law

As part of Victoria Law Foundation’s newly named Regional Law Talks program (previously Law Talks Intensive), over 300, Year 11 and 12 rural VCE Legal Studies students, from five schools got the unique opportunity to learn from retired judges and legal practitioners at Mildura Senior College on 26 and 27 of August.

The program offers a real-world perspective on the law, with presenters drawn from across the legal sector, including: the Honourable PD Cummins AM, a retired Supreme Court judge and Chair of the Victorian Law Reform Commission; retired magistrate Clive Alsop; representatives from the Victoria Police; Paul Dore, Juries Commissioner; and local services, including the Dispute Settlement Centre of Victoria and Murray Mallee Community Legal Service.

With a focus on getting students involved and thinking, the program offers lots of opportunities to interact with presenters and truly deepen their understanding of the law and legal system.

Victoria Law Foundation Executive Director, Joh Kirby, said, ‘We’re thrilled to bring Law Talks to Mildura this year. The program offers Mildura Legal Studies students opportunities that their metropolitan counterparts take for granted. And a lot more.’
