A week of where law meets life

And that’s a close to Victorian Law Week 2025! After more than 100 events across metropolitan and regional Victoria, thousands of people had the opportunity to learn what to do and where to get help when life and the law meet.

The law can intersect with life in many ways. It can be to do with your home, work, relationships, where you are or what you buy. Victorian Law Week 2025 provided Victorians a program of over 100 events to provide awareness, information and support to know what to do when the law intersects with life.

We thank the event organisers, including local libraries, Neighbourhood Houses, law firms, the Courts, integrity agencies, community groups, and community legal centres, whose participation is vital to the success of Victorian Law Week.

A diverse program of events

The 2025 program reflected the myriad nature of legal problems in everyday life, covering a wide range of topics including the intersection of law and arts, the use of restorative justice in road trauma, community-based events to provide legal advice, to an engaging mock inquest into the picnic at Hanging Rock.

Events took place across Victoria, including free workshops and sessions in Ballarat, Ararat, Geelong, Cobram, Warrnambool, the Bass Coast, and throughout Melbourne. These events provided community members with the chance to speak directly with lawyers and support services, offering practical guidance on navigating legal challenges when they arise. Sessions ranged from general drop-in opportunities to more targeted programs, such as Mortgage Stress Victoria’s informative session, designed to empower those facing mortgage difficulties.

Embracing the year’s theme of intersection, many events focused on how law connects with daily life. Tenants Victoria combined education and engagement with their “Bites and Rights” lunchtime session, while West Heidelberg Community Legal brought a creative twist with “Interplay,” a law-themed story time event for all ages.

A multi-agency approach to communities in Wimmera

Every Law Week, we prioritise connecting legal services to regional communities that may face barriers to receiving legal support and education. Our regional area of focus this year was the Wimmera region.

Our Under One Roof sessions in Horsham and Stawell provided free law clinics that brought multiple agencies to members of the community. Over tea and coffee, locals were able to get help identifying how the law intersects with their lives and connecting with the right support. With representatives from the Victorian OmbudsmanEnergy and Water Ombudsman VictoriaVictorian Aboriginal Legal Service, Tenants Victoria, Victoria Legal Aid, Young Workers Centre, Victoria Police, and Ballarat and Grampians Community Legal Service, this multi-agency approach is all about making legal help more accessible, personal, and supportive for everyone in the community.

Thank you to Centre for Participation and Stawell Neighbourhood House for welcoming us and helping to reach out to the local community as part of our Community Law Talks program. It provided a great launching point for fostering greater legal awareness across the Wimmera.

We extend our gratitude to the organisations whose generous contributions made Law Week possible, our Major Sponsors Department of Justice and Community Safety, Integrity Oversight VictoriaVictoria Legal AidVictorian Legal Services Board + Commissioner, Federation of Community Legal Centres, and Sponsors Law Institute of VictoriaVictorian Bar, and Victorian Ombudsman.

While Law Week 2025 has come to a close, there is still an opportunity to learn more. Many events from throughout the week are now available to view on-demand, and we encourage people to see what legal help is available for when the law intersects with their life.
