Exploring where law meets life to build legal capability
Victorian Law Week (18–24 May 2026) brings together community organisations, legal services and government agencies to help Victorians understand their rights and find help when they need it.

The law can intersect with life in many ways. It could be to do with your home, work, relationships, where you live or what you buy. Sometimes problems are easy to deal with. Other times they can feel confusing, stressful or overwhelming.
Victorian Law Week responds to these challenges by connecting people with trusted local services and practical information to support understanding of how the law works, where to get help, and how the justice system operates in practice.
Where law meets life
Legal problems rarely arrive neatly labelled as legal. Research shows that there are 6.4 million problems in Victoria that could be resolved by using the law. That's 42% of Victorians who may experience a problem that may have a legal solution without realising it. This year’s Law Week theme, Where law meets life, reflects what research consistently shows, that legal problems are part of daily life and they are often experienced alongside other challenges.
Building legal capability is key. Legal capability is not about knowing the law in detail. It is about recognising when the law may be relevant, understanding basic rights and responsibilities, and having the confidence to seek information or support. People with stronger legal capability are more likely to act early and achieve better outcomes.
Victorian Law Week supports capability in practical ways. Many events and resources are designed to help people to recognise these issues as legal, and the steps to take to resolve them. The community-based events create opportunities to ask questions, hear from trusted experts and learn about services available locally. Importantly, Victorian Law Week is not just a one‑off week of activity. It is part of a broader effort to build legal capability through awareness, problem recognition, connection and relationships. By bringing people together with local services, community organisations and legal experts, the week helps strengthen networks that continue well beyond the events in May. These connections make it easier for people to recognise issues, seek help earlier and know where to turn in the future.
Find an event that can help
Across Victoria, events are held in neighbourhood houses, libraries and community spaces, as well as online through live webinars and on‑demand resources. The majority of events are free or low cost.
Victorian Law Week events focus on real-life situations and help shift perception of the law as something distant or intimidating to something practical and relevant. It supports a justice system that works better by helping people build confidence, capability and connections over time.
