Where law meets life

Victorian Law Week 2026 brought communities, legal services and local organisations together across Victoria to help people see how the law relates to everyday life.

This year’s theme, Where law meets life, reflected a simple reality, that legal problems often show up as everyday problems. They can start with housing, work, family, debt or consumer issues. Often, people do not realise there may be a legal solution, or where to turn for help. Victorian Law Week helped make those connections clearer.

What happened during the week

During the week, 141 events were held across 39 local government areas, with nearly half of all in-person event staking place in regional Victoria. About 30% of the program included an online component, helping extend access beyond local venues. Our Law Week legal information videos were viewed more than 900,000 times on social media, and more than 80,000 people visited the Victorian Law Week website to explore the program, understand common legal problems and find support.

For people who could not attend live, on-demand and recorded content made it possible to catch up later and engage in their own time. This extended the reach of Victorian Law Week beyond the event dates and helped make legal information more flexible and accessible.

Building legal capability through connection

Victorian Law Week was not just about the number of events. It was in the way information reached people through familiar places, trusted voices and practical conversations. Community event organisers shaped sessions around what mattered locally, helping people ask questions, recognise issues earlier and feel more confident about what to do next.

Victorian Law Week is part of a sustained effort to build legal capability. Each event, conversation, video and referral point added to that effort. That is the lasting value of the week. It strengthens the link between legal information, community support and everyday life.
